Degree in English Studies – Competences

General and specific competences

In the design of the general and specific competences of the Degree in English Studies, the principles written in 3.5 of RD 1393/2007, of October 29, which establishes the organization of official university courses (BOE 260, of October 30, 2007, Chapter 1), according to which any professional activity must be carried out:

  1. I) “from respect for fundamental rights and equality between men and women.
  2. II) From the respect and promotion of Human Rights and the principles of universal accessibility and design for all, according to the provisions of the final provision of Law 51/2003, of December 2, on Equality of opportunity, non-discrimination and universal accessibility for disabled people.

III) In accordance with the values ​​of a peaceful and democratic culture.

Likewise, the general and specific competences included in the White Paper of the Degree in studies in the field of Language, Literature, Culture and Civilization of the National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation, the annex prepared by the Andalusian universities for this Degree and the conclusions of the document prepared by AEDEAN for the Degree in English Studies have been taken into account. However, these have been expanded because of the design needs of this Degree, whose broad objectives are defined around (1) the nature of the knowledge that it intends to offer, leading to assure the competences listed below; and (2) to the graduates profile that seeks to train: graduates prepared to function in a diversified labor sphere, where linguistic and cultural intermediation serve for the formation and learning of English, public management, international and diplomatic relations, management and resolution of intercultural conflicts, translation, teaching and research. It can be imagined, then, that the graduates will be able to develop their work in the business, cultural and tourism world, public administration, teaching and research. Finally, the suggestions of the groups or non-university entities related to this Degree (schools, professional associations, reference companies in the sector) and that have been part of the external agents commission consulted to assess the memory, have been integrated. The competences in documents prepared by networks, projects or national and international entities are also included. We try that the Degree profile is adjusted to the social and labor demands of the University of Cádiz environment. In this way, the graduates will get the following general and specific competences:

 

Language competences

 

Regarding language skills, our Faculty proposes as general criteria that all philological Degrees reach a knowledge of the specific language of the Degree and of a second modern language. In the Degree in English Studies, the student’s training will culminate with the acquisition of skills related to level C1 of CEFR and of some skills related to level C2. With regard to the second language, if it is French or German, the training could culminate with the acquisition of language skills related to level B1 (CEFR). In the case of the other languages offered by the Faculty, the student must have acquired the skills related to level A2 of CEFR.

 

Other complementary competences for curricular development

 

The University of Cádiz assumes the commitment to promote values ​​through training, which is incorporated as an institution among its purposes, as well as those contemplated in the legal framework for higher education institutions, and those agreed upon for the autonomous community of Andalusia by the Andalusian Council of Universities. Accordingly, through the annual teaching planning, it will be proposed to include in the subjects of training activities and content related to aspects such as:

  1. I) Democratic values; cooperation, solidarity, and peace; commitment to human development and equity; interculturality and social inclusion
  2. II) Sustainability and environmental commitment; equitable, responsible and efficient use of resources

III) Equality between women and men; respect for diversity

  1. IV) Companies and institutions social responsibility; professional conduct codes
  2. V) Knowledge of the social environment related to the studies; knowledge of the professional environment
  3. VI) Knowledge of the professional context linked to the Degree in the world

VII) Design for all and universal accessibility; entrepreneurial culture

VIII) Language skills development, and especially the most specific of the Degree.

 

Entrepreneurial skills

 

CE1 Being able to develop independence, intuition, initiative and vision of the future.

CE2 Being able to develop creative and innovative ideas and find “competitive advantages” with a view to a clear orientation towards achievement.

CE3 Being able to acquire self-confidence and desire to excel and learn.

 

Basic, transversal and specific competences

 

In order to achieve the general objectives of the Degree set above, it is necessary to develop in the student a series of basic, transversal (or generic) and specific competences:

 

Basic competences [Section 3.2 of Annex I of RD 1393/2007 (BOE 30.10.2007)]

 

B1) That students have demonstrated to possess and understand knowledge in a study area that starts from the general secondary education base, and is usually found at a level that, although supported by advanced textbooks, also includes some aspects of knowledge coming from the vanguard of their study field.

B2) That students can apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional manner and possess the skills usually demonstrated through the argument elaboration and defense and the problem resolution within their study field.

B3) That students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their study field) to make judgments that include a reflection on relevant issues of a social, scientific or ethical nature.

B4) That students can communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to a specialized or non-specialized public.

B5 That the students have developed the necessary learning skills to undertake subsequent studies with a high autonomy.

 

Generic Instrumental Competences

 

G1) To know in a basic way in the ​​English studies area and in the professional profiles related to it.

G2) Be able to search, treat, synthesize and disseminate different information in a structured and systematic way, using the different interpretive skills.

G3) Be able to plan and manage time in the execution of research works, presentations, and other written and oral projects.

G4) Be able to handle the New Information and Communication Technologies as a tool for learning, research and dissemination.

G5) Being able to gather data from texts methodically, and put them in relation with the characteristic theoretical and critical apparatus.

G6) Be able to oral and written communication in a foreign language different from English.

G7) Be able to put in practice the acquired knowledge.

 

Systemic competences

 

G8) To develop autonomous learning strategies for information management.

G9) To solve problems and make decisions with a critical and self-critical spirit.

G10) To generate innovative and competitive proposals and ideas in research and in professional activity, transforming them into projects, and adapting to new situations.

 

Personal competences

 

G11) To work as a team, both in a national and international context, through the presentation of ideas and information and the collective negotiation of solutions.

G12) Know other foreign languages and cultures from the English global dimension, and diversity and multiculturalism appreciation.

G13) To respect the diversity and plurality of ideas and opinions.

G14) To take on the projects design and management with initiative and leadership and entrepreneur spirit, valuing the ethical commitment, the concern for quality and the motivation for achievement.

 

Specific competences

 

They constitute particular training objectives of modules or subjects within the curriculum. They develop generic or transversal competences.

E6) To Know the great stages of the history of the English language.

E7) To know the English global dimension.

E8) To know the current English culture.

E9) To know the presence of English in diverse cultural production forms.

E10) To know the current socioeconomic reality of the English-speaking countries.

E11) To know the theories, techniques and methods for linguistic and literary analysis.

E12) To know the teaching of English as a foreign language.

E13) To know the methodologies of linguistic analysis in English.

E14) To understand the methodologies of literary analysis in English.

E15) To know the application of English to specific areas of development (culture, tourism, diplomacy, business, etc.), in addition to the broader ones of a modern humanistic discipline.

E16) To know the translation methodology (direct and inverse) in English.

E17) To know the reading in an intensive and extensive way.

E18) To know the expressive and creative use of the English language.

E19) To know the tools, technologies and processes available to the language expert in the research and labor world.

E20) To know the comparison between languages and cultures.

E21) To know a second foreign language in an instrumental way, at the level specified for the module.

E22) To understand the processes of linguistic planning, cultural management and editorial activity.

 

Professional competences

 

E23) To be able to produce texts in English, at the level specified for the module.
