Degree in English Studies – Access – Recommended profile for new students

The student profile for the Degree in English Studies is focused on promoting, enhancing and developing the knowledge and necessary skills for the efficient and global development of the student in these areas. The student must have acquired the basic, generic, specific language and entrepreneurial competences. The student wishing to study English Studies must have skills to integrate and skillfully handle the knowledge acquired during the training period. But the success in this Degree not only depends on the initial skills, but also on the work during the Degree and especially on motivation, not only for the study, but for being a trained and responsible professional.

The following values are important:

1) Interest in the study of linguistics subjects, in particular those related to the English language, the English literature, the linguistics and history and culture of the English-speaking countries.

2) Interest and pleasure for reading as a means of personal and professional enrichment.

3) Disposition to dialogue, plurality and tolerance towards different cultural manifestations.

4) Aptitude to carry out initiatives, studies and other actions as a complement and alternative to the programmed teachings.

5) Willingness to study in other universities and countries in order to improve the knowledge acquired.

6) Eagerness to overcome communication barriers accepting mistakes as part of the communicative process.

7) Willingness to accept the uncertainty of learning a language, using all the resources available to maintain communication.

8) Aptitude to work in a group and to the critical exchange of ideas.

 

Likewise, students who want to study the Degree in English Studies must have basic linguistics, literary and cultural knowledge:

1) Linguistics: students must know the rules of grammatical description through the subjects studied in previous years of Spanish and English languages. They must know the grammar of the English language and must be able to apply their knowledge according to the provisions of RD 1393/2007, of October 29, Annex I, of access to university studies. It is recommended to be able to recognize the international phonetic alphabet symbols for the use of dictionaries and to identify the peculiarities of the English language pronunciation.

2) Literary: the student must have basic literary knowledge related to literature of the English language: authors, periods, works and genres, and its relationship with Spanish literature and other literatures.

3) Cultural: the student must have basic knowledge of some of the facts, figures and fundamental institutions that have shaped the history of English-speaking countries, and their most well-known originated cultural manifestations, such as cinema, music and arts.

Annually, the Entry Profile is measured in the new students, and an assessment of the results and of the improvement proposals is made by the Degree Coordinator. These are taken to the Faculty Board for approval if appropriate (Procedure P02 – Pre-university orientation procedure and entry profile included in the UCA General Quality Assurance System and the Degree itself). The regulations of Bachillerato teachings consider that the student must have the necessary skills and communication skills in English to be able to start at level B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages. The necessary support procedures will be provided to give the student an additional training, to update, strengthen and complete the training received in Bachillerato.
