Degree in Arabic and Islamic studies – Teaching planning – General structure of the Degree

1. Teaching structure

This section details the structure of the syllabus. The syllabus is organised according to a structure of modules and subjects. The modules and subjects proposed are coherent withthe general objectives and guarantee the acquisition of the competences of the degree.

 

In order to adapt the map of degrees to the demand, it was decided to propose a joint action plan that would comply with the recommendations of the Dictamen de Parlamento deAndalucía on the Andalusian university system of 2001, the agreements of the Academic Commission of the CAU and the Governing Council of the University of Cadiz.

 

With this objective in mind, a joint planning of the teaching in the Faculty has been articulated, which implies the existence of a first year of common contents almost in its entirety for the philological type degrees. In addition, and following the structure approved by the Andalusian Commission for Philology, these degrees share twelve credits of modern language in the compulsory subjects, as well as a single credit assigned to the end-of-degree project in the different degrees (six credits).

 

In accordance with the guidelines set out in Real Decreto 1393/2007 of 29 October, the first year of student enrolment consists of basic branch subjects, most of which are common to all degrees with philological roots. Of these subjects, five have been established at Andalusian level (Language, Linguistics, Literature, Modern Language, Classical Language) and are distributed in a total of 36 credits. The Andalusian commission for philologies decided that the distribution of the remaining 24 credits to complete the 60 credits of basic branch subjects should be left to the discretion of each university. In this sense, the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the University of Cadiz, in an extraordinary session held on 3 February 2009, agreed to reserve twelve of these 24 credits to try to complete the transversal training of the student, while the other twelve credits were assigned to each of the degrees in order to introduce introductory subjects to more specific contents of the degrees. This distribution responds to the philosophy expressed in the aforementioned Real Decreto in the sense that the 60 credits of basic branch subjects will be automatically recognised for Bachelor’s degrees in the same branch of knowledge. In addition (except in exceptional cases), the centre has placed all the basic branch subjects in the student’s first year of enrolment, thus facilitating the change of enrolment and degree in the second year when appropriate. In this way, a student can enrol in the first year of any degree and change degree after that year without having to take first-year contents; instead, he/she would go directly to the second year of the new degree chosen.

 

1.1. Distribution of the syllabus in ECTS credits, by subject type

 

The Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies is structured in such a way that full-time students must complete 240 ECTS credits over four years, in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 1393/2007. This total includes 60 credits corresponding to basic training subjects, the rest being distributed in compulsory subjects, optional subjects, external internships and the Final Degree Project, as indicated in the following table:

 

(1) Includes 6 credits of the subject ‘Practicum’ which may consist, alternatively, of Professional Internships in Companies or Institutions’, recognition for Erasmus, Socrates or similar stays in the countries of the languages studied in the degree or a ‘Seminar’ on professional insertion or orientation to employment and research techniques or those commonly used in different professional fields related to the Degree.
(2) Studies made up of 30 ECTS organised in compulsory modules for students of Arabic and Islamic Studies and an optional itinerary among the three offered (30 ECTS).

 

In order to open up opportunities for double degrees, in accordance with the possibilities analysed jointly by the dean’s team and the Vice-Rector’s Office for Planning and Quality, it is necessary for the credits that reinforce the nuclear contents to appear as optional, although they may, in reality, be compulsory for students who do not take double degree itineraries. In relation to this point, students will be able to configure their Study Plan by taking all the Basic Training courses (60 credits) and the Compulsory courses that make up the core of the Degree (114 credits, including the 6 credits of the Final Degree Project). All students will also carry out a ‘Professional Insertion’ activity of 6 credits, which may consist of 1) an internship in a company or institution, 2) an Erasmus, Socrates or similar stay in the country of the languages studied in the degree, or 3) a set of Seminar activities. These contents are in line with what has been established by the Andalusian Council of Universities to define the proposed Bachelor’s Degree, and have the support of the social agents represented in the Plenary of this Coordinating Body of the Andalusian University System.

 

Taking into account their interests, and with the necessary advice from the guidance system of the Centre, the student studying this Degree at the University of Cadiz must complete 60 optional credits according to the following options: taking reinforcement subjects of specific
contents of the degree and modules oriented towards a specific curricular profile, or taking subjects or training activities authorised by the Governing Council of the University; either from among those included in other degrees, or specifically created and oriented towards their comprehensive training. In any case, students may request the recognition of up to 6 credits for university activities: cultural, sporting, student representation, solidarity and cooperation.

 

The aim of this proposal is to provide a better response to the social demands and vocational demands of students, thus complying with the provisions of Art. 56.3 of the Andalusian Law on Universities. It will be up to the Governing Council, in view of the Centre’s proposals, to determine which contents may broaden the specific optional offer of the degree.

 

2. General explanation of the curriculum planning. Title B.

 

This section contains a description of the modules and subjects of the syllabus, as well as their timetable. The University of Cadiz has decided that some Degrees, as is the case of Arab and Islamic Studies, include among the optional subjects some of those corresponding to a second Degree (Degree B). In this way, the 60 credits of Basic Training will include 12 credits corresponding to the basic subjects offered by a second degree. In addition, 18 credits of the optional subjects of the syllabus will be shared with those offered in a second degree (Degree B), which will enable access to the optional itineraries detailed below. As for the remaining 30 optional credits, it has been decided that students will be able to choose between the specific itinerary offered by the Bachelor’s Degree: Applications of Arab and Islamic Studies and one of the itineraries proposed by the second degree.

 

In order to favour the academic and professional interest of the students, it has been decided to allow the student to take the credits of Degree B between two possible degrees: Hispanic Philology and French Studies; they must necessarily choose one of the two, without being able to combine them. Once the student has chosen the second degree with which to complete the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies, he or she is faced with credits
of a compulsory nature.

 

In the syllabus, each subject of Title B is called: Title B Core, Title B Elective and Title B Itinerary II:

  • Title B Core. There are 12 credits corresponding to the Basic Training subjects that in Hispanic Philology or French Studies are taught within the 60 credits of the common module. They are taught in the first and second semester of the Bachelor’s Degree (1st year).
  • Degree B Elective. These are 18 credits from the subjects of Hispanic Philology and French Studies. In the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies they are taught in the fifth and seventh semester (3rd and 4th year of the Degree).

As the student has to choose one of the two degrees offered in Degree B, the plan for the Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies indicates the two possible options as follows:

  • Hispanic Philology option.
  • French Studies option.

Each option specifies the subject or subjects to be taken, which correspond strictly to the syllabuses of Hispanic Philology and French Studies; they are not to be understood as subjects that these two degrees offer to students of Arabic and Islamic Studies. Therefore, the teaching activity of these subjects, their specific competences and their contents correspond to the general design of the respective curricula of Hispanic Philology and
French Studies.

 

As for the itinerary, students must choose between the itinerary offered by Arabic and Islamic Studies (Itinerary I) and one of the two itineraries of Degree B (Pathway II). In the case of choosing the second one, it will necessarily be the one corresponding to the degree chosen in the compulsory courses. Each itineraryis given a specific name and is identified as follows:

  • Itinerary I. Corresponds to the specific itinerary of the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies.
  • Itinerary IIa. Corresponds to the itinerary of Hispanic Philology.
  • Itinerary IIb. Corresponding to the itinerary of French Studies.

Below is a description of the structure and contents of the syllabus of the Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies.

 

2.1. Description of the modules and subjects that make up the curriculum

 

The syllabus for the Bachelor’s Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies consists of the following modules and subjects:

(1) Students must take only 18 credits of one of the two modules offered, depending on the option chosen in the basic module (Hispanic Philology or French Studies).

Brief description of the course: Study of historical processes, with special attention to the phenomenon of colonization and immigration which have motivated the cultural diversity of present-day societies as well as literature from French-speaking areas as a means of approaching the notion of multi-culturality and intercultural mediation. The subject programmes (i.e. migration, exile, interculturality,…) will cover all subjects that may be considered of interest for future graduates.

The present report sets out the commitment to teach the modules and subjects indicated, which will be articulated at each time through the subjects determined by the Governing Council of the University of Cádiz.

 

By decision of the Governing Council of the University of Cádiz, an extension in the optativity of degrees could be established. In this sense, subjects from other degrees or subjects offered by the University with contents related to or complementary to the degree may be added to the offer of optativity. In this way it is intended to give a better response to the social and vocational demands of students, thus taking into account what is established in Art. 56.3 of the Andalusian Law on Universities. The Governing Council shall determine, on the basis of proposals from the Centre, what content may be added to the offer of qualification specific to the degree.

 

The student may take the option as follows:

  1. By completing the electives courses of the modules in one of the two itineraries provided for in the curriculum.
  2. By completing four elective subjects of which the modules form one of the two itineraries provided for in the curriculum and recognising up to six credits for:
  • completion of external work experience, up to a maximum of 6 credits, beyond those which may be compulsory
  • Courses and workshops aimed at the acquisition of transversal competencies, offered by the University, and which are appropriate to the qualification: Languages, Informatics, Entrepreneurs, as determined by the Governing Council.
  • Courses and activities oriented towards the integral training of the student, offered by the University, according to the list determined and updated by the Governing Council, and chosen in such a way as to complement those proper to the degree.
  • recognition of credits for participation in activities referred to in art. 12.8 of RD 1393/2007 [Following to art. 46.2.i of the Ley Orgánica 6/2001, of 21 December, of Universities, according to which students may obtain academic recognition in credits for participation in university activities cultural, sports, student representation, solidarity and cooperation.

1.3.  Coordination mechanisms of the title.

 

Overall, the proposed modules constitute a coherent and feasible proposal, ensuring the acquisition of the skills of the degree. In order to develop the competences proposed within the framework of the EHEA, various teaching learning activities will be developed, among which are: theoretical class, practical class, practical-theoretical class, theoretical-practical class, debate, exhibition, seminar, Individual specialised tutoring, collective specialised tutoring and non face-to-face activities. To this end, regular meetings will be held between the coordinator of the degree and the teaching team in order to ensure continuous horizontal (within an academic year) and vertical (throughout the various courses) coordination of the subjects covered by the degree, as regards the design, type and relationship of the activities designed. Evaluation systems will also be extended, which may include, in addition to the final examination, participation by students in face-to-face activities and the preparation and/or presentation of work supervised by the teacher.

The concepts and applications of publishing lines. Sources for the knowledge of books for sale in the Spanish market (editorial bulletins, book fairs, catalogues, professional magazines). The publishing business: profit-loss compensation policies. Criteria and practice of pre-selection and reading of originals. Book formats (paperback, hardback, pocket, large format).  The Spanish market and its sectors: Spain, Southern Cone, Mexico, Andean Pact, USA. The large publishing groups and independent imprints in the Spanish-speaking world. Book production: layout, notions of typography and graphic design, proofs, writing back covers and flaps as sales strategies, book materials. The external trades (reading, correction, layout, etc.). Public and private initiatives. Access to and dissemination of culture: mass culture or cultural elitism.
