Degree in Arabic and Islamic studies – Competences
3.1. BASIC, GENERAL AND SPECIFIC COMPETENCES
Following the typology proposed by the White Paper, the competences proposed in the Degree have been classified into three large blocks (the reference key will be the one that appears on the modules and subject cards that make up the “Detailed description of the modules and subjects of teaching “of point 5.3 of this verification report):
- The basic competences, included in section 3.2 of Annex I of R.D. 1393/2007 (B.O.E. of October 30, 2007).
- The entrepreneurial skills have been extracted from The Guide of the Entrepreneur; From the idea to the company, Valencia, Bancaja-AJEV, 2008.
- The transverse (generic) and specific competences of the Degree, contained in the White Book of the Degree in Arab and Islamic Studies: Degree in “Languages and Civilizations”. National Commission for the Adaptation to the European Higher Education Area (Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior EEES) of the Degree in Arabic Philology. May 2005
A) BASIC COMPETENCES
B01 That the students have demonstrated to possess and to understand the knowledge in an area of study that leaves from the basis of the general secondary education and usually finds a level that, although it is supported by advanced text books, also includes some aspects that imply knowledge coming from the avant-garde in their study field.
B02 That students know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation, in a professional way and possess the skills that are usually demonstrated through the elaboration and defense of arguments and problem solving within their study field.
B03 That students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (usually within their area of study) to make judgments that include a reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues.
B04 That the students can convey information, ideas, problems and solutions to a specialized and non-specialized public.
B05 That students have developed those learning skills necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.
The general competences of the Degree are classified as instrumental, personal and systemic competences, although all of them are listed consecutively, writing letter G before, indicative of general competence.

C) SPECIFIC DEGREE COMPETENCES
The contents of the new Degree are aimed at training graduates with extensive linguistic competence in the Arabic language, both in their oral and written records.
On the other hand, the subjects of more theoretical content should provide the future graduate in Arabic and Islamic Studies with a general knowledge of the main phenomena of the Arabic and Islamic civilization, both in its classical stage and in the modern and contemporary, understanding that the peculiarities of the formation of the current Arabic culture means that a rigid caesura can not be established between that classical culture and that of today.
The specific competences of the Degree program contemplate the specific objectives to be achieved during the training period. Although they are classified in different sections, all of them are listed consecutively, writing the letter E before, indicating specific competence.
E01. Learning and using tools that introduce students to the typical forms of the Arabic language.
E02 Ability to relate and express themselves in Arabic.
E03 Acquisition of auditory, reading, oral and written skills.
E04 Read and understand texts of the classical and current Arabic language.
E05 Know how to compose texts in Arabic language of an oral or written nature.
E06 Knowledge of the great stages of Arabic and Islamic history, from the period before the appearance of Islam until the present moment.
E07 Understand the unity and diversity of Arabic and Islamic culture over time and its evolution, from its own civilizational parameters, and showing the differences with other cultural paradigms
E08 To know the classical and contemporary Arab literary currents, with their authors and works, in the main literary genres.
E09. Read and write in Arabic
E10. Communicate orally in Arabic.
E11. Analyze Arabic texts

E14. Use information and knowledge technologies (ICT) applied to learning the Arabic language.

E16. Ability to understand Arabic literary aesthetics, especially in relation to poetry.
E17. Knowledge of the great stages of Arabic literature, knowing how to distinguish the classical era from the modern and contemporary, with its movements and literary schools.
E18. Knowledge of the great Arabic authors and literary works, of general scope, and with special reference to those related to the Maghreb and al-Andalus area.
E19. Ability to read, translate, understand and interpret an Arabic literary text based on their own culture.
E20. Acquisition of tools to analyze a literary text: composition techniques, literary genres, rhetorical figures, Arabic metrics …
E21. Ability to identify and distinguish the elements of Arabic literature, those that Arabic literature has taken from other cultures and the main contributions that Arabic literature has provided to universal culture, especially in the European field and in Spanish literature.
E22 Apply ICT to Arabic literature and its texts.
E23. Understand the historical dynamics of the Islamic world from pre-Islamic times to the present, in its human, geographical variety
E24. Know the different periods of Islamic history, different from Western history, and be aware that the past-present dichotomy is not fulfilled in Islam.
E25. Ability to periodize and understand historical periods based on parameters different from those of Western history, not valid for other cultures of the world, such as Islam.
E26. Know the intrinsic elements of the Islamic civilization to understand it in its historical dimension and its processes.
E27. Know the contributions that the Islamic civilization has given to the universal culture.
E28. Knowledge of a non-western culture, Islamic, very important in the future of humanity, and that has strongly influenced the development of the Western world.
E29. Ability to understand social, political, religious, mental, economic and technical structures, with their associated ways of thinking, living and feeling, of the Islamic world, which are different from their corresponding ones in the western world.
E30. Specific application of ICT to the historical, social, cultural and civilizational issues of the Arabic and Islamic world.
E31. Knowledge and application of the main documentation techniques and their relevance for linguistic, literary, historical or cultural research in the field of Arabic and Islamic studies.
E32. Be able to understand and transmit scientific production in the Arabic language, critically evaluating the bibliography consulted and framing it in a theoretical perspective.

E53. Acquisition of basic materials to continue training in the press texts reading, audition and monitoring of radio and television news programs, songs, serials and films, as well as the use and understanding of resources in Arabic through Internet.
E54. Knowledge of Moroccan dialectal Arabic.
E55. Management of concepts related to Arabic dialectology.
E56. Competences in approaching methods to Arabic dialects.
E57. Tools and methods to develop work in Arabic dialectology
E58. Acquisition of sufficient linguistic skills to express themselves in Moroccan dialectal Arabic.
E59 Knowledge of non-Arab human groups that live in states that define themselves as Arabs, like those of North Africa with respect to Amaziges (Berbers), and that go completely unnoticed by being consciously or unconsciously included in the category “Arab” or “Islam”. Learn to distinguish and understand the cultural, linguistic and religious heterogeneity of the so-called “Arab” countries of North Africa.
E60. Develop a critical vision of North Africa history in its different phases from an Amazonian (Berber) perspective.
E61. Train the student about subjects not directly addressed in Arabic studies such as anthropology, language and literature of the amaziges.
E62. Discover a language of the Camito-Semitic family other than Arabic with the acquisition of their basic linguistic structures and build basis for linguistic comparisons.
E63. Sensitize students to questions of linguistic and cultural contacts in the Mediterranean.
Specific to the option of Hispanic Philology
E64. Knowledge of the development and configuration of the main literary genres in medieval Spanish literature through their texts.
E65. Knowledge of the Spanish linguistic variation from a current perspective.
E66. Knowledge of Romanesque literatures in their context through their texts.
E67. Knowledge of the different methods in L2 didactics.
E68. Knowledge of the legal framework and the organization of Spanish language and literature teaching in secondary education, in the Spanish State and especially in the Andalusian Community.
E69. Knowledge of the legal framework and the different tasks related to the publishing world in the Spanish context.
E70. Knowledge of the theoretical and methodological foundations for linguistic and intercultural mediation.
E71. Development of linguistic and intercultural mediation skills in various social and professional fields.
Specific to the French Studies option
E72. Knowledge of the French language at an intermediate level.
E73. Be able to analyze the divergences between the French language and the Spanish language.
E74. To know the literature in French language in its relations with the other arts.
E75. To know the main translation trends and the most common translation techniques from / to French and the characteristics of sectorial languages in French.
E76. Be able to use specific techniques of documentation and information management for the compression and translation of specialized texts to / from French.
E77. Knowing the historical processes that have given rise to the cultural diversity of current societies with special attention to the phenomenon of colonization and immigration in the Francophone world.
E78. To be able to understand and analyze the literary production of the francophone field from a multicultural point of view and to know how to extract from it practical elements for intercultural mediation.
E79. To know the literature in French language in its role of analysis of the social imaginary and the awareness towards the cultural stereotypes.
D) IDIOMATIC COMPETENCES
Regarding language skills, our Faculty proposes as general criteria that all the Philological Degrees achieve a knowledge of the specific language of the Degree and of a second modern language. With regard to the second language, in the case that it is French or English, the training could culminate with the acquisition by the student of the language skills related to level B1 (CEFR). In the case of the other languages offered in the Faculty, the student must have acquired the skills related to level A2 of the CEFR.
The specific purpose of the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies is that the student can develop as an independent user in level B1 of the CEFR. Those students who pass the Itinerary I proposed by the Degree, can reach level B2.
E) ENTREPRENEURIAL COMPETENCES
In terms of entrepreneurial skills, The Guide of the Entrepreneur; From the idea to the company has been taken as a reference (Valencia, Bancaja-AJEV, 2008). In this document you can find the main qualities that an entrepreneur must develop and which ones the student can acquire by taking the entrepreneurship workshop included in the “Practical” module and by following the itineraries that have been designed with a profile of professional orientation:
CE1) To develop independence, intuition, initiative and vision of the future.
CE2) To develop creative and innovative ideas and find “competitive advantages” with a view to a clear orientation towards achievement.
CE3) To acquire self-confidence and desire to excel and learn.
F) OTHER COMPLEMENTARY COMPETENCES FOR CURRICULAR DEVELOPMENT
The University of Cádiz assumes the commitment to promote values through training, which is incorporated as an institution among its purposes, as well as those contemplated in the legal framework for higher education institutions, and those agreed upon for the autonomous community of Andalusia by the Andalusian Council of Universities. Accordingly, through the annual teaching planning, it will be proposed to include in the subjects of training activities and content related to aspects such as:
