Degree in French Studies- Teaching plan- General structure of the Degree

General structure of the degree

 

  1. Teaching Structure

This section details the structure of the syllabus of the French Studies Degree. The syllabus is organised according to a structure of modules and courses. The modules and courses proposed are coherent with the general objectives and guarantee the acquisition of the competences of the degree.

In order to adapt the map of degrees to the demand, it was decided to propose a joint action plan that would comply with the recommendations of the Dictamen de Parlamento de Andalucía on the Andalusian university system of 2001, the agreements of the Academic Commission of the CAU and the Governing Council of the University of Cadiz.

With this objective in mind, a joint planning of the teaching in the Faculty has been articulated, which implies the existence of a first year of common contents almost in its entirety for the philological type degrees. In addition, and following the structure approved by the Andalusian Commission for Philology, these degrees share twelve credits of modern language in the compulsory courses, as well as a single credit assigned to the end-of-degree project in the different degrees (six credits).

In accordance with the guidelines set out in Real Decreto 1393/2007 of 29 October, the first year of student enrolment consists of basic branch courses, most of which are common to all degrees with philological roots.

  • Of these courses, five have been established at Andalusian level (Language, Linguistics, Literature, Modern Language, Classical Language) and are distributed in a total of 36 credits.
  • The Andalusian commission for philologies decided that the distribution of the remaining 24 credits to complete the 60 credits of basic branch courses should be left to the discretion of each university. In this sense, the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the University of Cadiz,
    • agreed to reserve twelve of these 24 credits to try to complete the transversal training of the student,
    • while the other twelve credits were assigned to each of the degrees in order to introduce introductory courses to more specific contents of the degrees.

 

This distribution responds to the philosophy expressed in the aforementioned Real Decreto in the sense that the 60 credits of basic branch courses will be automatically recognised for Bachelor’s degrees in the same branch of knowledge. In addition (except in exceptional cases), the centre has placed all the basic branch courses in the student’s first year of enrolment, thus facilitating the change of enrolment and degree in the second year when appropriate. In this way, a student can enrol in the first year of any degree and change degree after that year without having to take first-year contents; instead, he/she would go directly to the second year of the new degree chosen.

 

1.1. Distribution of the syllabus in ECTS credits, by course type

 

The Graduate Degree in French Studies is structured in such a way that full-time students must take 240 ECTS credits over four years, in accordance with the provisions of Real Decreto 1393/2007. This total includes 60 credits corresponding to basic training courses, the rest being distributed among compulsory and elective courses and the Final Degree Project, as indicated in the following table:

 

Includes 6 credits of the course ‘Practicum’ which may consist of ‘Professional Internships in Companies or Institutions’ or a ‘Seminar’ on professional insertion or employment orientation and research techniques or those commonly used in different professional fields related to the Degree.

Students will be able to configure their Study Plan by taking all the Basic Training subjects (60 credits) and Compulsory courses that make up the core of the Degree (114 credits, plus 6 credits for the Final Degree Project). All students will also take a ‘Practicum’ course of 6 credits, which may consist of an Internship in Companies or Institutions or a set of Seminar activities. These contents are in accordance with what has been established by the Andalusian Council of Universities to define the proposed Bachelor’s Degree, and have the support of the social agents represented in the Plenary of this Coordinating Body of the Andalusian University System.

 

In accordance with their interests, and with the necessary advice from the guidance system of the Centre, students studying this Degree at the University of Cadiz must complete 60 optional credits according to the following options: taking subjects to reinforce specific contents of the degree and modules oriented towards a specific curricular profile, or taking courses or training activities authorised by the Governing Council of the University, either from among those included in other degrees, or specifically created and oriented towards their comprehensive training. In any case, students may request the recognition of up to 6 credits for university activities: cultural, sporting, student representation, solidarity and cooperation.

 

Without entering into contradiction with what is expressed in the previous paragraph and in order to allow training in the specific itineraries of the Degree in French Studies, subjects from other degrees or subjects offered by the University with contents related or complementary to the degree may be added to the offer of optional subjects. In this way, the aim is to provide a better response to social demands and to the vocational demands of students, thus complying with the provisions of Art. 56.3 of the Andalusian Law on Universities. The Governing Council, in view of the proposals made by the Centre, will be responsible for determining the contents that may be added to the specific elective offer of the degree.

 

Students will be able to take the optional subjects in the following way:

 

By taking the 5 optional subjects that make up the modules of one of the two itineraries included in the syllabus.

By taking 4 optional subjects from those that make up the modules of one of the two itineraries foreseen in the syllabus and the recognition of up to 6 credits for:- external work placements, up to a maximum of 6 credits, in addition to those that may be compulsory.

– taking subjects, courses and workshops aimed at the acquisition of transversal competences, offered by the University, and which are appropriate to the degree: Languages, IT, Entrepreneurship, as determined by the Governing Council.

 

– taking courses and activities aimed at the integral training of the student, offered by the University, according to the list to be determined and updated by the Governing Council, and chosen in such a way as to complement those specific to the degree programme.

 

– recognition of credits for participation in activities contemplated in art. 12.8 of RD 1393/2007 [Following art. 46.2.i of Ley Orgánica 6/2001, of 21 December, on Universities, according to which students may obtain academic recognition in credits for participation in university cultural, sporting, student representation, solidarity and cooperation activities].

 

The proposed programme of the UCA Degree in French Studies would be structured as summarised in the following table:

1.2.1. Description of the modules and courses of which the plan is made up

 

The present Report sets out the commitment to teach the Modules and Courses indicated, which will be articulated at each moment by means of the subjects determined by the Governing Council of the University of Cadiz.

Optional modules. General considerations.

 

Given that the offer of electives is the most relevant aspect of the study programme of the University of Cadiz, the one that differentiates it from the rest of the Degree Studies of the Andalusian Autonomous Community and the rest of Spain, we consider it necessary to reflect on this matter. The 60 ECTS specific to the degree of an optional nature that students must take are organised into two large blocks:

 

  • 30 credits organised into two teaching modules that focus on the study of
    • the literatures generated in the context of the French-speaking world -a profile that has historically marked the studies of French Philology at the UCA:
      • Module X: Francophone Literatures (12 credits)
    • contemporary literature and literature in its relationship with other arts:
      • Module XI: French Language Literatures and other arts (6 credits)
      • Module XII: Contemporary French Literature (6 credits)
    • while implementing French language training with competences at CEFR level C2 with a French Language IV (6 credits).
  • 30 credits organised in two itineraries (30 + 30 ECTS):
    • Itinerary A: ‘Literatures and cultures of French expression’ (30 ECTS) with two content modules:
      • Module XIII: ‘Monographic studies of literature in the French language’ (18 cr.) and.
      • Module XIV: ‘Analysis and translation of French language texts’ (12 credits).
    • Itinerary B: ‘Linguistic and cultural mediation in a bilingual French/Spanish context’ (30 ECTS) with two modules:
      • Module XV: ‘Sectoral languages and specialised translation (French/Spanish)’ (12 cr.) and
      • Module XVI: ‘Literary and cultural diversity in the French-speaking world’ (12 cr.)

The two specialised itineraries proposed allow access to a plural scientific field which opens the professional path of education (after the students have met the required prerequisites) and many other activities including language counselling, translation or cultural mediation. Thus, the scientific profiles of UCA graduates -and in application of the guidelines of the Libro Blanco for the Degree in studies in the field of language, literature, culture and civilization- “enable cultural openness in various sectors of linguistic and cultural intermediation, such as professionals from cultural institutes, libraries, research centres; activity in the field of publishing and translation; international relations, Diplomatic representation, public administration, cultural management, tourism, etc.”

 

The modules or courses covered by this curriculum constitute a coherent and feasible proposal (taking into account the students’ commitment) and guarantee the acquisition of the competences of the degree for the following reasons:

 

Concentration of core subjects at the beginning of the plan with a view to ensuring the acquisition of instrumental skills and general knowledge in the humanities.

The progressive and systematic nature of the acquisition of communicative skills in the French language following the methodological guidelines, the sequencing of contents and the evaluation criteria described in the CEFR.

 

The progressive and systematic nature of the acquisition of disciplinary knowledge (in French and French language, linguistics, literature, history and culture taught throughout the student’s curriculum development).

 

At the end of this section, a map of the competences assigned to each module/subject will be included (cf. infra pp. 119-121).

 

1.2.2. Temporal sequencing of the curriculum

 

The temporal sequencing of French studies at the University of Cadiz (already listed in the table in the previous section) is summarised as follows:

 

1.3. Coordination mechanisms of the title

 

As a whole, the proposed modules constitute a proposal which ensures the acquisition of the competences of the diploma. In order to develop the competences proposed within the framework of the EHEA, various teaching-learning activities will be developed, among which are: theoretical class, practical class, practical-theoretical class, theoretical-practical class, debate, exhibition, seminar, Individual specialised tutoring, collective specialised tutoring and non-face-to-face activities. To this end, regular meetings will be held between the coordinator of the degree and the teaching team in order to ensure continuous horizontal (within an academic year) and vertical (throughout the various courses) coordination of the subjects covered by the degree, as regards the design, type and relationship of the proposed activities. Evaluation systems may include, in addition to the final examination, the participation of students in face-to-face activities as well as the preparation and/or presentation of work supervised by the teacher.
