Degree in Arabic and Islamic studies – Access – Recommended profile for new students.

The student profile for the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies is focused on promoting, enhancing and developing the knowledge and necessary skills for the efficient and global development of the student in these areas. The student must have acquired the basic, generic, specific language and entrepreneurial competences. The student wishing to study this Degree must have skills to integrate and skillfully handle the knowledge acquired during the training period. But the success in this Degree not only depends on the initial skills, but also on the work during the Degree and especially on motivation, not only for the study, but for being a trained and responsible professional.

The following values are important:
  • Interest in the study of subjects, particularly those related to the Arabic language, the Arabic literature, the linguistics and history and culture of the Arabic and Islamic countries.
  • Interest and pleasure for reading as a means of personal and professional enrichment.
  • Disposition to dialogue, plurality and tolerance towards different cultural manifestations.
  • Aptitude to carry out initiatives, studies and other actions as a complement and alternative to the programmed teachings.
  • Willingness to study in other universities and countries in order to improve the knowledge acquired.
  • Eagerness to overcome communication barriers accepting mistakes as part of the communicative process.
  • Willingness to accept the uncertainty of learning a language, using all the resources available to maintain communication.
  • Aptitude to work in a group and to the critical exchange of ideas.

Likewise, the student who wishes to study the Degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies must have basic knowledge of a linguistic, literary and cultural nature:

Linguistics: students must be familiar with the principles and units of grammatical description through the subjects studied in previous years of Spanish Language. In the case of the Arabic language, the Spanish educational system hardly offers the possibility of studying the Arabic language in school or high school, so that it is not possible to require a prior knowledge of Arabic language for new students. It would be advisable to be able to recognize the symbols of the international phonetic alphabet for the use of dictionaries.

Literary: the student must possess basic literary knowledge related to general literature: authors, periods, works and genres, and their relationship with Spanish literature and others.

Cultural: the student must possess basic knowledge of some of the facts, figures and fundamental institutions that have shaped history and its most well-known originated cultural manifestations, such as cinema, music and fine arts. These general knowledge will be useful to address those of the Arab-Islamic culture.

 

Annually, the Entry Profile is measured in the new students, and an assessment of the results and of the improvement proposals is made by the Degree Coordinator, and the improvement proposals that may be convenient are taken to the Faculty Board for approval if appropriate.
